A LETTER TO THE GIRLS
I’m so excited you’re interested in attending the Youth EmpowHERment Sleepover (YES)! Two years ago, when I was going through a difficult time, I discovered two things: therapy and a conference. While either hasn't solved everything, both have drastically improved my life. I discovered so much about myself, increased my self-confidence, and made lifelong friends.
That said, the conference I attended was aimed at older participants. At 13, I was the youngest attendee and some of the topics were a little mature for my age. That gave me the idea for the Youth EmpowHERment Sleepover. I want other young girls to be as enlightened and encouraged as I was, but I also want to focus on the issues more closely related to girls closer to my age. So, as soon as I got home, I began creating this event – a perfect mix of female empowerment education and light-hearted fun!
Please don't think you have to be in crisis to benefit from this event. These workshops offer encouraging stories and practical advice that is applicable to all of us, every day. Hopefully, it'll prevent one of you from experiencing what I went through. I want to inspire girls to embrace their own unique personalities and styles. I've seen so many trying to be something they're not, trying to look and act a certain way so they’ll fit in. They’re too afraid to be themselves. I know first-hand what that pressure to conform feels like - how it can damage your self-esteem and lead you to make choices that don’t reflect your true self.
I’ve since learned to love myself - the way I look, the way I think, the way I live in the world. There is room for all of us, and the most empowering way to take your place is by celebrating your honest and authentic self! After all, if we were all the same, the world would be boring, right?
I've worked with the YES team to create an amazing experience for you. We’ve partnered with other girl-centric organizations, professionals, and wellness experts to create informative and entertaining workshops. Over the course of the weekend, you’ll also have chances to put your workshop learning into practice, as you discover new truths about yourself and set your future goals. And, of course, there will be a Saturday night party: it wouldn’t be the ultimate sleepover without one!
I just have three requests from the YES participants:
1. RESPECT THE SAFE ZONE – We are providing a safe place to share, learn, and grow. That means no ego, no judgement, and no drama! We won’t tolerate any gossip, bullying, or peer exclusion. From the beginning, we are sisters.
2. BE AUTHENTIC – The only way to get the most from this experience and to really grow is to be open and honest, even a little vulnerable. Trust me - it works.
3. HAVE FUN - Discovering everything wonderful you have to offer this world can be so much fun. Making new friends, improving your relationships, participating in the activities, and doing a small act of community service will bring you joy.
I can’t wait to meet you! Xoxo
